Shrivenham Bowls Club hosts many touring teams each season, reflecting its hospitality. Visitors can explore McArthur Glen Designer Outlet Village or enjoy nearby bowling clubs. The South Cotswolds offers attractions like the Wild Life Park and Bourton on the Water. With 5,000 residents, Shrivenham features thatched cottages, historic pubs, and a unique 17th-century church.

Heartbreak in the final of the West Berks Indoor Competition yesterday morning.

We came with everything we had — a shot at retaining the title — but on the day Thatcham were worthy winners. A huge congratulations to them on their victory. 👏

No disgrace in falling short in a final. Heads high Shrivenham — that was a big effort from everyone involved and something to build on.

We’ll be back. 💪🎳

Poem … Why not…
Seven days and the green calls our names,
rollers of weathered wood and steady aims.
We polish the bowls by lamplight glow,
feel the weight and the muscle we know.

Dawn will find us with dew on the grass,
chalk in our pockets, the jack set to pass.
Voices will rise like the sun on the lane,
old jokes rekindled, new rivals to gain.

We measure the silence between breath and roll,
learn the soft arc that answers the goal.
Rinks laid out like pages to write,
each end a stanza, each shot a light.

Friends gather close where the boundary bends,
handshakes proffered, the rivalry blends.
Tactics whispered, the skip's quiet grin,
hope tucked beneath every hopeful spin.

Seven days 'til bowls sings its first clear ring —
the season unfolding on footstep and swing.
We come for the contest, we stay for the cheer;
the green is our compass, the season is here.

Chapter 1 - Episode 23 - An expanded roster of officers was elected to oversee the club, and the winners of the 1970 competitions were announced.

Before the first bowl of the new season is even rolled, we owe ourselves one final moment to look back. 🌿

Last year, Shrivenham Bowls Club achieved something it had never achieved before — a national title. Our Club Two Fours team played out of their skin, and when the final result came in, it was the name SHRIVENHAM that echoed across the tannoy. ⚪🏆

That moment was theirs. That honour is ours. All of ours.

So here's to the team, here's to last season, and here's to whatever comes next. The slate is clean. The green awaits. Let's go. 🙌

Chatper 1 - Episode 22 - At the AGM in March 1970 the club is referred to as Shrivenham Bowls Club for the first time and 15 matches were played including one against the Parish Council and one against the Cricket Club.

Chapter 1 - Episode 21 - The 1969 finals day saw Mrs D. Kill win the ladies singles, Mr D. Titcombe the men’s and Mr B. Moss the weekly aggregate and by the end of the year all forms with regards to the new green were completed and a draft lease for the ground had been drawn up.

Chapter 1 - Episode 20 - July 1969 a scale plan for the new green was produced and tenders were sought and the club must prevent any suggestion of a closed shop or clique developing so an open day was proposed.

After a month of regular posting, we took five days this week to review the stats, identify what’s working, and prepare for the next few months. We were pleased to see some people notice and ask about the content. It was a planned break to assess the first month. We’re back!

On Saturday, our greenkeepers led a team of volunteers to top dress the green for the start of the season.

Chapter 1 - Episode 19 - Ministry of Housing agreed to release land in the allotments. Parish Council supported applications for funds but our Treasurer pointed out that the club had got to raise £1250. Fundraising became an important challenge for the club to solve.

45-17 WIN! Celebrating a fantastic achievement in the West Berk Shield! Reaching the final is a testament to everyone's hard work and determination. Let's keep the momentum going and look forward to an exciting final. Well done, team!

Just last week, we reminisced about the memorable occasion when our skilled women claimed victory in the benevolent triples once again. However, this wasn’t their inaugural triumph! Back in 2001, Helen, Brenda, and Gladys secured the win for Shrivenham.

The draws for the Berkshire County Competitions were released yesterday, promising some exciting encounters. Our Shrivenham team faces a tough path, but conquering every rival is essential to secure the championship. The number of participants this year is remarkable!

Chapter 1 - Episode 18 - Mr Harry Knapp was nominated as the first Club President. To put the club on a more professional footing we decided to apply for affiliation to the Berkshire Bowling Association and EBA. We did this and became affiliated on 25th November 1969.

After a successful run, this marks our inaugural team sheet post! We're thrilled to have reached this stage on social media. Best of luck to the team in the Semi-Final of the West Berks Shield on 21st March at 11am!

Chapter 1 - Episode 17 - By October 1968 outline planning permission for the new green was given, attempts were made to have regular whist drives. Support did come from other organisations within the village one example being the Old Time Dancing Club who donated the profits from thier ball to the club.

Today, we wanted to reflect on the event from eight years ago when Helen, Cathy, and Val clinched the county benevolent triples title. Our ladies have achieved tremendous success over recent decades, and we take great pride in the accomplishments they have brought to the club.

Last night's quiz night at the club was a fantastic success! The atmosphere was electric, with teams eagerly competing and cheering each other on. Our quizmaster kept everyone entertained with a mix of challenging questions and witty banter.

Congratulations to the winning team, who took home the grand prize and, of course, bragging rights until next time.

A big thank you to everyone who participated and made the event memorable. We’re already looking forward to the next quiz night!

Chapter 1 - Episode 16 - 1968 also held discussion on possible fund raising methods, including a national appeal to all bowls clubs, that cost more than was donated!

Chapter 1 - Episode 15 - In 1968, the work on the “new green” was moving forward slowly and the new season started on the 6th May 1968 with 6 friendly fixtures with other clubs.

Yesterday, the committee gathered an hour early for the monthly session to preview our new Bowls Platform, developed over the last eight months by our Social Media Lead, Elliott. This season, OptiSelect will be available for booking and choosing rinks! #softlaunch #platform

Chapter 1 - Episode 14 - In the spring of 1968 various attempts were made to set up a village Combined Sports and Social Club.

Reflecting on December, we celebrated our dedicated greenkeeping crew with a special meal at the club!
It was a wonderful opportunity to recognize their hard work and commitment throughout the year. The atmosphere was filled with gratitude and camaraderie as we gathered to enjoy a delicious meal together. It was a memorable evening, highlighting the importance of teamwork and appreciation.

Yesterday, the cub organized a delightful cream tea afternoon, and everyone relished the cakes.

West Berks Shield Winners 2025 - As an outdoor club, we've ventured indoors and won on our first try last year! The team is doing great again, reaching the Semi-final in two weeks… more updates soon!
